During the spring and summer months, an abundance of pollen and other airborne allergens may give rise to allergic rhinitis in susceptible individuals.11 Allergic rhinitis can be complicated by sinusitis, or the exacerbation of existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma.12

The respiratory mucosa plays a critical role in the body’s defence against airborne particles, debris, and pathogens. Respiratory epithelium is lined with cilia that perform an integrated and coordinated movement known as mucociliary clearance.6,7
Mucociliary clearance is the process by which cilia transport the mucus blanket overlying the respiratory mucosa to the throat to be coughed out or swallowed. It is the primary means by which the airway clears pathogens, debris, and other airborne particles.7
